Day #23: Perler Patterns

You know those plastic cylinder beads you stick on a little pegboard and then iron until they melt together and become a cool…thingy…that your kid leaves all around the house and then cries if you “accidentally” throw it away?

WHO WANTS TO MAKE MORE OF THOSE THINGS!??!!! WE DO!!!!!

Try This GPT (requires ChatGPT+ subscription)

This one was a good example of the truth that learning how to work with LLMs is as much about knowing the right questions to ask as it is about the model being a magic machine that knows and achieves all.

We first started trying to get the model to create the patterns just with Python. Annnnd…yeah. (TBH, we don’t hate these…might make a “bad perler bead pattern maker just for kicks.)

But we figured maybe not everyone wants their “purple sea monster with tentacles and big scary eyes” to come out like a weird trauma blob or a rectangle that rolls its eyes at you.

So we dove back 20 years and researched how non-AI powered pixel art makers work. Turns out they all start with an image.

Which is why the Perler Patternmaker now generates an image with Dall-e and THEN converts it to a pattern. Works much better now. (But we kinda miss those weird little horror shows we started with.)

Use it to make perler versions of your pets. Just as cute and they never shit on your rug!

Still fired up about Snoop and the Solo Stove?! Mad that your 20mg Adderall XR is STILLL on backorder? Express your feelings about it in the form of a craft!

Day 23…out!

Sometimes it does the actual circles, sometimes it doesn’t. Welcome to the wonderful world of probabilistic systems, y’all!
