Day #7: Your Life as a ’90s Sitcom

Today’s GPT is the perfect antidote to your Sunday Scaries. It’s called TGIF and it’ll transport you right back to the Friday night prime time line up of the early ’90s. The only difference? This time, you’re the star.

Why did we decide to make a GPT to turn your life into a ’90s sitcom? No idea, but we’re glad we did.

Just tell it something that’s happened to you recently and TGIF will get to work, filling it out with zany neighbors, silly plot twists, and of course, cues for the laugh track. To top it off, it’ll use Dall-e to generate a promo photo for your episode.

To give you a little taste, here’s an episode straight from Jenny’s life, sitcom-ified by ChatGPT.

“The Great Hairball Hijinks”

[Interior: Jenny’s Apartment – Morning]

The sun beams through the curtains of a charming, slightly messy apartment. ’90s pop music plays in the background. Jenny, a young, energetic woman with a quirky sense of fashion, is jolted awake.

Jenny: (startled) “June, not on the comforter!”

June, a fluffy and cheeky cat, looks innocently at Jenny.

Laugh Track

Jenny gets ready for work, humorously navigating around the apartment while avoiding the ‘hairball zone.’ She’s preparing for a big presentation, practicing in front of her slightly disinterested cat.

[Exterior: City Street – Later]

Jenny exits her building, bumping into her eccentric neighbor, Mr. Franks, who’s always up to something bizarre.

Mr. Franks: (holding a strange gadget) “Morning, Jenny! Just invented a weather-predicting toaster!”

Jenny: (amused) “Does it also make toast?”

Laugh Track

[Interior: Jenny’s Workplace – Afternoon]

The presentation is about to start. Jenny opens her bag to get her notes, but instead, she pulls out… June’s toy mouse!

Laugh Track

Jenny improvises her presentation, using the toy mouse as a metaphor. Her boss, Ms. Wheeler, is oddly impressed.

Ms. Wheeler: “Jenny, that was… unexpectedly brilliant!”

Jenny returns home, tired but triumphant. She finds June curled up on the couch, looking extra adorable.

Jenny: (sitting next to June) “Well, partner in crime, we somehow pulled it off!”

June purrs, and the camera zooms out as the ’90s pop song plays again.

Laugh Track

And here’s the promo pic it created:

Don’t even care that it’s spelled wrong – this is perfection.

Challenges:
Not too many with this one, which is to be expected. After all, adapting one thing to fit into the structure of another thing is where GPT really shines. And the fact that most sitcoms are super formulaic doesn’t hurt either.

Though we did have to add in a step where it asks for characters’ names, since it kept generating Jenny as a dude, no matter the content of the script :/

To which we borrow the immortal words of Stephanie Tanner and say, “HOW RUDE!”
